Welcome to Exeter Osteopath

Susan Farwell

Exeter Osteopath is a centrally located, general osteopathic practice run by Susan Farwell. It is dedicated to providing the best in osteopathic care, whatever the specialist needs of the patient.

Susan qualified in 1981 from the British School of Osteopathy, is fully registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) and has 25 years of continuous Osteopathic experience.

Osteopathy is a safe and natural approach to healthcare. Patients may be treated for health problems from the trauma of birth to the arthritis of the elderly. Osteopathy uses many of the diagnostic procedures used in conventional medical assessment and diagnosis. Its main strength, however, lies in the unique way the patient is assessed from a mechanical, functional and postural standpoint and the manual methods of treatment applied to suit the needs of the individual patient.

Should I see my doctor first?

It is not necessary to see your GP first before consulting an osteopath but you may feel more comfortable doing so.

Osteopaths complete a 4 year rigorous training which now leads to a BSc degree.

Osteopaths are taught to screen the patient, using conventional medical diagnostic methods so that conditions which should be treated by a doctor are picked up at the earliest possible stage. At the first visit, Susan Farwell will spend most of the 45 minute appointment session asking questions and examining the patient. This may include taking the blood pressure, looking into the eyes, ears or throat with a small light or checking neurological reflexes with a patella hammer. If Susan Farwell thinks that the condition needs further investigation, for example a blood test, she will discuss the situation with the patient and delay starting osteopathic treatment until diagnostic questions have been answered. This may involve writing a letter to the patient's doctor or arranging for the patient to have an x-ray or MRI scan.
